Insulate Your Pipes
The most common plumbing issue that people have in the winter is frozen pipes. When your pipes freeze you can find yourself without running water, or your pipes might even burst (and then you’ll have, well, too much running water). Use insulation tape or foam to protect your pipes.
Prep Hose Bibs
Turn off and disconnect all of your outdoor hoses before winter comes on to prevent them freezing and getting damaged. Turn your hose bib off from the water valve inside the house, and set the valve on the hose bib itself to on. Leave it this way over winter.
Get to Know Your Water Shut Off
Winter is the time when you’re most likely to have a burst pipe. We hope you don’t have to deal with one, but just in case you do, make sure you are prepared by learning where your main water shut off is and how to use it. The last thing you need in the event of a plumbing emergency is to find yourself wondering how to turn the darn water off.
Plan for Your Holiday:
If you are going on vacation at all this winter (even a simple weekend getaway), either shut off your water while you’re away or install FLO by Moen which allows you to monitor and control your home’s water supply from anywhere in the world.
Let the Faucet Drip
If you are experiencing a cold snap and you know the temperature will be dropping particularly low, turn your faucets on just enough that they drip and allow them to do so overnight. This keeps a little bit of water flowing through your pipes and will help prevent freezing on the coldest nights.
