Different Types of Boilers and How They Work

What is a Boiler?

A boiler is a system that heats water which is then used to heat your home. Hot water or steam from the boiler is sent through your home heating system to create a warm, comfortable environment in your home. There are several types of boilers out there and many people don’t know the difference when it comes to choosing one for their home. Here are the most popular boiler types and how they work.

Conventional Boiler

The most common model, a conventional boiler has a burner that heats up an exchanger, which then warms up a large volume of water that is pumped through your home’s heating system once the thermostat is turned on.

Combi Boiler

A combi boiler is (you guessed it!) a combination between a boiler and a water heater. That means it heats water both for heating and for home use such as showering and washing dishes. Combi boilers are energy efficient and affordable and they take up very little space, making them a great option for a smaller home where space is precious, but they are also excellent for mid-size homes. Combi boilers are not the best choice for very large households where you regularly have multiple people using hot water at once.

High-Efficiency Boiler

High-efficiency units use less energy to run and are therefore better for the environment (and your wallet). These boilers are a good option for a mid-size to a larger size home. The initial installation cost for high-efficiency boilers is generally higher than conventional units, but the energy savings on your monthly bill will save you a bundle in the long run.
